10 Effective Home Remedies for Tooth Pain

Home Remedies for Tooth Pain

Would you believe that some moms consider a toothache worse than the pain of giving birth?

We do not doubt it one bit because the pain from a toothache can radiate to other parts such as the ear, head, and throat. And it is not just the throbbing pain that’s annoying. It is the constant dullness that never lets you forget about it. You cannot even sleep it off unless you take painkillers.

But of course, you know that taking painkillers often is not good. That’s why home remedies for tooth pain are a great alternative. That said, here are 10 natural remedies you can try for your toothache.

1. Onion

If the cause of your toothache is an infection, the juice of an onion is one of the best home remedies for tooth pain you can try. It works similarly to clove oil by killing germs in the oral cavity. Simply cut an onion into tiny pieces and chew for at least two to three minutes.

2. Clove Oil

Clove oil is effective because it can kill bacteria and has a numbing effect. Just apply directly to your aching tooth. Or if you have whole cloves, just crush them to release the oil and put it on your bad tooth.

3. Wheatgrass

There are two ways to use wheatgrass for tooth pain. Chew it and make sure it lingers on the sore tooth or use it as a mouthwash. Wheatgrass is a powerful antibacterial, which is why it’s also great to use for preventing tooth decay.

4. Black Tea Bag

Black tea has tannins, which can relieve inflammation. To use, apply a wet tea bag to the affected tooth.

5. Cold Compress

A cold compress is not just great for bruising. It can also be used to temporarily relieve pain and swelling associated with toothaches. To use, just apply a cold compress to your cheek until the area feels numb or until the pain subsides.

6. Peppermint Tea

Peppermint tea is not just great for settling your tummy. You can drink it to numb the pain from your sore tooth. We prefer fresh leaves but you can also use dried ones or a tea bag if that’s what you have on hand.

7. Salt Water Rinse

As far as home remedies for tooth pain go, this one is probably the easiest to prepare and do often. All you need is to dissolve salt (1/2 tsp) in about 230 ml (8 ounces) of water and gargle as you would a mouthwash.

8. Salt and Pepper Paste

Add a few drops of water to equal parts of salt and pepper. Then apply the paste to the aching tooth. It works because salt is antibacterial, while pepper is anti-inflammatory.

9. Ginger and Cayenne Pepper Paste

Ginger contains gingerols, which are potent phytonutrients that can fight inflammation. Cayenne pepper, on the other hand, contains capsaicin which works as an analgesic. To make a paste, mix equal parts of cayenne pepper and ginger with water.

Apply the paste to the sore tooth. You can use a cotton ball for this. Just take note that this will sting a bit so try to hold it as long as you can.

10. Acupressure Is One of the Best Home Remedies for Tooth Pain

Depending on the location of the affected tooth, you can try massaging specific pressure points to relieve your toothache. If your face feels tender, you can also work on the pressure points in your hands and feet.
