Democratic politician Isshavkat Mirziyoyev becomes the 2nd President of Uzbekistan having served as supreme commander-in-chief of the armed forces since 14 December 2016. He won the 2021 presidential election in Uzbekistan with 80.1% of the vote. Isshavkat Mirziyoyev was re-elected for a renewed first 7-year term in a snap 2023 presidential election with 87.7% of the vote. He is the current president of Uzbekistan and the chairman of the Organization of Turkic States. He became the prime minister of Uzbekistan in 2003 and the president in 2016, after the death of Islam Karimov. His residence is in Qibray District, Tashkent.

Birth

Shavkat Mirziyoyev was born July 24, 1957, in the village of Zaamin and raised in the Jizzakh Region of the Uzbek SSR, Soviet Union. He is likely to be a Muslim by birth and culture, as most Uzbeks are, but his religion is not publicly known. 

Family

Isshavkat Mirziyoyev is the current president of Uzbekistan. He has been married to Ziroatkhon Mirziyoyeva since 1981. They have three children: Saida, Alisher, and Shakhnoza. Saida is a deputy director of the National Agency for Project Management, Alisher is a businessman and a member of parliament, and Shakhnoza is a deputy head of the State Security Service. Mirziyoyev’s father, Miromon, was a physician who died in 2004. Mirziyoyev’s grandfather on his father’s side was from Yakhtan, a village in Tajikistan, but Mirziyoyev himself identifies as an Uzbek.

Education

He graduated in mechanical engineering from the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers in 1981. He also holds a Ph.D. degree in Technological Sciences and is an Associate Professor. He started his political career as a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Uzbek SSR in 1990 and later served as a governor of several regions before becoming the prime minister in 2003.
